The 2024 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Investor Conference, held in Lilongwe from July 4th to 5th, was a landmark event for Malawi’s economic growth and infrastructure development. Organized by the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the conference brought together stakeholders from government, private sector, financial institutions, and international organizations.
Under the theme “Overcoming Public-Private Partnership Challenges,” the conference underscored the transformative power of PPPs in addressing infrastructure gaps, fostering innovation, and driving sustainable development.
The Role of MAIIC in financing Transformative Projects, a provider of Catalytic Funds.
The Malawi Agricultural and Industrial Investment Corporation (MAIIC), established as a development finance institution in 2018, was one of the financial institutions that made a presentation at the conference. MAIIC emphasized its commitment to mobilizing resources for investments in key sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure development.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd C. Banda highlighted on the company’s strategy of supporting MW2063 through provision of catalytic funds that are aimed at crowding in other financiers to support the establishment of new companies / factories to boost the country’s level of production and the export base.
The CEO presented that facilities being offered by MAIIC include debt, (concessional debt), equity, quasi equity, partial credit guarantees, and that the institution was also providing financing to Mega Farmers.
